UT – Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is one of the most widely used methods in non-destructive testing (NDT). Using high-frequency sound pulses, we can detect internal defects, measure wall thickness, and — combined with PAUT — even identify corrosion defects, all without damaging the object or stopping operations. Nordic NDT performs ultrasonic testing with personnel certified to EN ISO 9712, within the scope of our SWEDAC-accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025).

How does it work?

A probe transmits ultrasonic pulses into the material. When the sound encounters a defect — a crack, an air pocket, an inclusion or a material irregularity — it is reflected back to the probe. The travel time and the strength of the echo tell the testing engineer exactly where the defect is located and how it is oriented.

Results are presented in real time.

Where is it used?

  • Process industry & energy — Pipelines, pressure vessels, storage tanks, boilers and valves — often during ongoing operation.
  • Steel construction & infrastructure — Welds in load-bearing structures, bridges, cranes and building frames in accordance with SS-EN 1090.
  • Manufacturing — Castings, forgings and rolled products for internal defect detection before delivery.
  • Marine & offshore — Hull plating, piping systems and load-bearing components in corrosive environments.

Why choose Nordic NDT?

We are a SWEDAC-accredited laboratory with over 30 years of combined experience in non-destructive testing across Swedish industry. Every assignment is planned and performed by personnel certified to EN ISO 9712, and our internal knowledge transfer — from senior Level III technicians to the next generation — ensures a consistently high quality level regardless of the size or complexity of the assignment. We work with modern equipment, take environmental and workplace safety seriously, and deliver results with full documentation and traceability.
