MT – Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is one of the most effective methods for detecting surface-breaking and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials such as steel. The method is fast, reliable and delivers immediate visual results — which makes it a standard method for weld inspection across virtually all industries. Nordic NDT performs magnetic particle testing with personnel certified to EN ISO 9712, within the scope of our SWEDAC-accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025).

How does it work?

The component is magnetized and fine magnetic particles — dry powder or suspended in liquid — are applied to the surface. If a crack is present, the magnetic field leaks at that point and the particles accumulate along the edges of the defect, making it clearly visible. Fluorescent particles under UV light provide maximum sensitivity. The result appears immediately and can be assessed on the spot.

Where is it used?

  • Weld inspection — Surface crack detection in welds during production, installation and periodic inspection, per EN ISO 17638 and SS-EN 1090.
  • Lifting equipment & cranes — Fatigue crack detection in hooks, shafts, beams and load-bearing components.
  • Mining & heavy industry — Inspection of equipment subjected to constant high loads and mechanical wear.
  • Manufacturing — Quality control of castings, forgings and machined steel components.

Why choose Nordic NDT?

MT requires more than equipment — it requires an inspector who knows how defects present themselves in different materials, geometries and load conditions. Our certified technicians perform MT daily across Swedish industry, and every result is delivered with full documentation and traceability under our SWEDAC accreditation.
