VT – Visual Testing
Visual Testing (VT)
Visual testing (VT) is the foundation of all non-destructive testing — and often the first method applied. A trained, certified eye can detect surface cracks, weld defects, corrosion, deformation and coating damage that instruments alone may miss. Nordic NDT performs visual testing with personnel certified to EN ISO 9712, within the scope of our SWEDAC-accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025).
How does it work?
Certified inspectors systematically examine surfaces, welds and structures — directly or using aids such as mirrors, endoscopes, magnifiers and measuring instruments. The inspection follows established standards, primarily EN ISO 17637 for welds, with documented acceptance criteria. It sounds simple — but it takes training and experience to know exactly what to look for, and where.
Where is it used?
- Weld inspection — Systematic examination of welds during production and installation, per EN ISO 17637 and SS-EN 1090.
- Periodic inspection — Condition assessment of steel structures, pressure equipment, lifting equipment and piping.
- Pre- and post-inspection — VT is performed before and after other NDT methods to plan the work and verify results.
- Coating & corrosion inspection — Assessment of surface protection and corrosion status on structures in demanding environments.
Why choose Nordic NDT?
Visual testing is deceptively simple — the difference lies in the inspector’s competence. Our certified inspectors have decades of combined experience from Swedish industry and know what damage patterns look like in reality, across every type of facility. All results are delivered with full documentation and traceability under our SWEDAC accreditation.
